EV charging cost calculator
Work out the real cost of charging your EV at home and compare it against filling a gas car. Enter your electricity rate and efficiency to see cost per charge, cost per mile, and your likely savings.
How it works
- Multiplies the energy you add by your home electricity rate.
- Compares it against a gas car's fuel cost over the same distance.
- Shows cost per mile and estimated savings over time.
What changes your result
- Your electricity rate, and whether you're on a time-of-use or dedicated EV plan
- The car's efficiency in miles per kWh, which falls in cold weather and at speed
- Charging losses of around 10%
- The gas price and mpg of the car you're comparing against
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
It depends on your electricity rate and the car’s efficiency, but most EVs cost roughly $0.03–$0.06 per mile at home — commonly $8–$15 to add 200 miles. That is usually far less than the equivalent gasoline.
Is it cheaper to charge an EV than buy gas?
In most regions, yes. Home electricity is typically much cheaper per mile than gasoline, especially on off-peak or time-of-use rates. Savings depend on your local power and gas prices, which this calculator lets you set.
Do time-of-use rates change the cost?
Significantly. Charging overnight on an off-peak EV rate can halve your cost versus peak rates. If your utility offers a time-of-use or EV plan, scheduling charging for off-peak hours is the easiest way to save.
